When it comes to Gel-X nail extensions, the system has been making waves — but there's still a common myth floating around: "Gel-X doesn't last as long as acrylic or hard gel."

Let's bust that myth together.

The Truth About Gel-X Nail Longevity

When applied properly, Gel-X nails can last just as long, if not longer, than traditional acrylic or hard gel extensions. We're talking up to 3–4 weeks of strong, flexible, long-lasting wear. So, what's the secret? It all comes down to prep and application.

Nail Prep = Long-Lasting Gel-X

If you've ever had lifting, popping off, or early tip wear, chances are the issue wasn't the system — it was the prep. Proper nail prep is essential to getting the most out of your Gel-X nail extensions. Here's a quick breakdown:

Simple Gel-X Manicure Prep

  1. Cut down and file the natural nail to the desired length.
  2. Gently push back the eponychium and lift cuticle tissue from the nail plate using the ceramic quartz cuticle pusher or the green stone bit.

Step 2: Gently push back the eponychium and lift any cuticle tissue from the nail plate.
  3. Use the green stone bit to exfoliate any calluses around the nail.
  4. With either a 100/180 buffer or the natural nail buffer bit, buff the surface of the nail. A roughened, buffed surface allows for better adhesion to the Extend Gel.

Sizing and Prepping Gel-X Tips

Gel-X tips laid out sidewall to sidewall on natural nails to check sizing before application
Finding the right tip size is essential — each tip should fit sidewall to sidewall with no gaps.

Once the nails are prepped, it's time to find the right tips:

  1. Choose the correct tip sizes by ensuring each Gel-X tip fits sidewall to sidewall with no gaps. If the natural nail is more curved, sculpted Gel-X tips should be used. For a flatter, wider nail bed, either sculpted or natural Gel-X tips can be used.
  2. Apply the tip at a 45-degree angle to the nail's eponychium and gently press down to ensure both sidewalls are fully covered. If the size is in between, it's better to pick the bigger size and carefully file down the base of the tip to match the natural nail.
  3. Check the base of the Gel-X tip. If the curvature of the base does not match the eponychium, file the tip to create the perfect match.
  4. Use either Gel-X Prep or an e-file to etch and prep the underside of the tip. Make sure all dust is removed from the tip if using an e-file.

Mastering Gel-X Application

Proper tip prep is the foundation of a flawless, long-lasting Gel-X set.
  1. Apply pH Bonder onto the natural nail. This cleanses the plate of any natural oils or residues that could inhibit the adhesion of the Extend Gel. Do this to all nails on hand.

Steps 1–2: Apply pH Bonder then Non-Acidic Gel Primer to every nail on the hand.
  2. Apply Non-Acidic Gel Primer onto the nail. This primes the nail plate with a tacky layer, allowing for better adhesion with Extend Gel. Do this to all nails on hand.
  3. Apply a thin layer of Extend Gel onto the natural nail, focusing the bulk of the gel onto the center of the nail rather than the sidewalls. Do this to all nails on hand.

Step 3: Keep the Extend Gel centered on the nail — avoid the sidewalls at this stage.
  4. Cure the entire hand in an LED lamp for 30 seconds or a UV lamp for 60 seconds.
  5. Apply a bead of Extend Gel onto the underside of the Gel-X tip. It's better to pick up less gel than too much.

Step 5: Less is more — a small bead of Extend Gel in the tip is all you need.
  6. Holding the Gel-X tip from the free edge, apply the tip at a 45-degree angle, starting near the eponychium. Get as close to the cuticle as you can without touching the skin.
  7. Apply even, steady pressure while allowing the Extend Gel to flow down to the free edge.

Steps 7–8: Hold steady, even pressure and let the gel flow all the way to the free edge.
  8. Once the Extend Gel reaches the free edge of the nail, check to ensure the sidewalls are completely covered and the tip is positioned straight on the nail. Wipe off any excess coming from the sides.
  9. Using a flash cure light, flash cure the Gel-X tip. Maintain steady pressure to avoid air bubbles. Slowly rotate the thumb while pressing down to expose more of the nail bed. You can gently pinch the sides while curing to ensure the curves of the tip stay snug against the curves of the natural nail.

Step 9: Pinch the sides while flash curing to keep the tip hugging the nail's natural curves.
  10. Remove any excess Extend Gel cured onto the Gel-X tip with the ceramic cone bit.
  11. Repeat steps on all five fingers, then cure the entire hand for 30 seconds in an LED lamp or 60 seconds in a UV lamp.
  12. Finish file each nail, ensuring the desired shape and length. Tips are now ready for color prep and color application!

And just like that, you've got a long-lasting set of Gel-X tips that can go toe-to-toe with acrylic or hard gel.

Gel-X Nails vs. Hard Gel or Acrylic

So how do they compare?

  • Acrylic: Durable, but more rigid and can feel heavy on the nail.
  • Hard Gel: Strong, but often needs more sculpting skill and soak-off time.
  • Gel-X: Lightweight, flexible, fast to apply, and easy to soak off.

When done right, Gel-X nails are long-lasting and durable with less damage to your natural nails.
