2019 Nails Mag Cover Tech

Aprés Master Educator Albee Chen’s winning cover for Nail Magazine January 2019 issue! For the theme of the shoot, her inspiration stemmed from Edo period Japanese art. In her own words

I was heavily inspired by my background learning and doing nails in Japan. I wanted to pay tribute to where I learned my foundation and skills as a nail tech. When I saw that the cover could be for a January cover, my immediate thought was the Lunar New Year (or Chinese New Year). This is the most important holiday all year round in many countries in Asia and especially in Japan. Red is an auspicious color for the New Year so I knew I wanted to do a theme to honor the Japanese culture. I wanted to do a theme that people could connect with and notice- and geishas are a notable part of Japan history and culture that many people can easily recognize and identify with being a Japanese theme. The art on the nails is inspired by traditional Japanese woodblock prints from the Edo period.
